The glass melting process is one of the most energy intensive processes used in the production of molten glass, which is thereafter converted into fine glass fibers. The process comprises heating raw materials and melting the materials in a forehearth of a glass melting furnace to form a molten glass. The glass is usually delivered to the forehearth through a channel in a forehearth roof. At the forehearth, the molten glass flows through a series of orifices in a forehearth pot. The orifices are connected to a channel or trough which serves as a chute for guiding the molten glass downwardly through a fiber forming or attenuating area of a fiber forming apparatus. The molten glass is thereafter blown into fine fibers as it travels along the chute. The type of furnace and fiber forming apparatus used in the glass melting process are usually specific for the type of glass being produced. For example, typical apparatus used in producing cement, glass, and other types of glass products include a forehearth having a roof channel with a series of orifices, and an attenuation means having a trough with a series of openings. The forehearth roof channel or trough has sufficient slope or drop to direct the molten glass through the orifices and into the attenuation means. The forehearth and attenuation means are located such that the molten glass flows downwardly along the trough. The attenuation means is shaped to allow the molten glass to be attenuated or drawn into fine fibers. As is well known in the glass fiber making industry, control of the temperature of the molten glass delivered to the forehearth of the glass melting furnace is important to ensure that the desired quality of glass fiber is produced.
