It's a terrific break from that feeble lot of military-enforcer movies about nerds in their mom's basements that have been buzzing around Hollywood for about a decade now. This is a serious piece of cinema about how we're going to deal with the War of Zombies in the real world. And what does that mean? Well, it means a lot of things - but to start with, it means the world going to hell in a handbasket. From the premise of your average zombie movie, you would assume that society is a little hinky. The zombies appear from some terrible virus and wreak havoc on the population. (Note that this type of premise isn't original; numerous movies have followed this line, but they can all be traced back to a particular 1968 Korean film called I Am a Cyborg, So What? I'm halfway through with the reboot of I Am Legend and I'm already feeling a little cheated on.) After that, society sucks up all the zombies it can and is forced to deal with the ensuing havoc. Humanity wins, and we look a bit smug. The real world doesn't work like that. The world might look black and white, and it might seem that we have a choice between the military and a bunch of zombies, but the truth is that they'll both be fighting us. The military can be beaten, but they'll only beat us to a pulpy, bloody pulp. We have no weapons, and the fighting will be bloody, brutal and long. The zombies won't be beaten back, but they can't be killed. They just keep on coming. If we go down the route of treating the world like a bloody game of Risk, then the zombies won't last, but it's unlikely that we're in a position to force the military to give up the assault. If we're to win, we'll have to fight dirty and go to ground, with the intention of staying there until the air has cleared and our little army can get back to work. We can try and get the food out, but it'll be a long haul. We might get some help, but that'll be a more intermittent thing. We may even get airlift support, but it won't be very regular, and it'll be conditional. Hell, you might actually think that we're fucked. We will be, but it won't be for long.
